A necklace from important Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, with a fascinating Paleolithic motif. This collectible piece features a large 970-grade silver pendant in the shape of an arrowhead. The arrowhead is pierced with a hunting scene in the style of Stone Age cave paintings. A hammered finish creates the appearance of a hammered flint arrowhead. The pendant hangs on a thong of mauve silk velvet, finished with spade-shaped silver terminals. The necklace fastens lariat-style, tying around the neck. The back of this pendant is marked "Silver Hecho en Mexico," "YY 592," it bears the maker's mark Pineda began using in 1953 and Mexico's Eagle 1 mark. A work of art that is a true conversation starter. Circa 1950.

This piece dates from a high point in silver jewelry design in Mexico. In the 1940s, the Mexican city of Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for designers and studio jewelers was the locally mined materials. Silver and semi-precious gems were abundant and affordable.

Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco in 1919. He apprenticed with William Spratling before opening his workshop in 1939. Pineda's Modernist style was bold and architectural, and his jewelry is amongst the most technically refined ever made in Taxco.
